Here in the United States, 33% of adults have used CBD products at least once. CBD is becoming a household term, and most people have at least heard of it. Still, there’s a lot of confusion regarding the different types of CBD.
For instance, which type is best for you if you’re a beginner? Getting the strength right can feel like a challenge if you’re not sure where to start, but it’s quite simple. It begins with understanding the terminology behind CBD products.
Here are some of the most common types and what they mean.
Full-Spectrum CBD
CBD is one of 113 identified cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. Another well-known cannabinoid is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), commonly known as the chemical responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis.
CBD oil may contain trace amounts of THC. Legally, it can have no more than 0.3% THC.
Both marijuana and hemp belong to the Cannabis sativa species. The difference is that hemp must have no more than 0.3% THC. As such, hemp-derived products won’t produce the same “high” that THC products will.
When shopping for CBD products, you may see labels such as “isolate” or “full-spectrum.” Full-spectrum products contain additional compounds, such as trace amounts of THC, flavonoids, and terpenes.
Many people like full-spectrum cannabis products as they believe in the entourage effect. The entourage effect is a theory that states that taking cannabis compounds together provides potential benefits.
CBD studies are relatively new but show promise. For instance, a recent study on the entourage effect looked at the use of terpenes and cannabinoids in the treatment of anxiety and mood disorders.
CBD Isolate
CBD isolate is also known as pure CBD. It’s been removed from other cannabinoids and compounds.
While isolate products are typically weaker than full-spectrum ones, they do have some benefits. For instance, they offer more CBD per serving, isolate oils are tasteless, and it’s easier to control the potency.
Another huge benefit for people is that an isolate product contains 0% THC.
CBD products containing even a trace amount of THC may show up on a drug test. CBD isolates shouldn’t show up on a drug test unless you’re using low-quality products.
That said, it’s still possible. Make sure you understand your company’s drug policy.
Tinctures and Oils
Perhaps the most common way to take CBD is to take it as an oil. Tinctures or oils are usually sold in bottles with a dropper. You place several drops under the tongue and take the product sublingually.
It’s generally recommended to hold CBD oil under the tongue for at least 60 seconds before swallowing. This gives the oil time to get absorbed into your bloodstream.
Many beginners use oils as they’re easy to find and take. However, finding the right dosage can be tricky. You need to discover the right number of drops for your body, so finding the right dosage isn’t an exact science.
Remember, your body will react to CBD differently depending on several factors, such as genetics, medication use, weight, etc. That’s why it’s best to start with a low dosage and work your way up once you’re sure how you’ll react.
A general guideline is to take between 1-6mg of CBD for every ten pounds of weight. Start with 1mg for low-severity issues and work your way up as needed.
Capsules
Capsules or pills are another one of the many types of CBD. The benefit of this method is that it’s often easier to maintain a specific dosage.
Capsules are usually used for the treatment of digestive issues and seizure disorders. We’re still learning about the effects of CBD as a form of treatment, but many already use CBD for its potential benefits.
You may have heard of Epidiolex, for instance. If not, Epidiolex is the first FDA-approved drug derived from active ingredients in marijuana. It’s used to treat two severe forms of epilepsy: Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
Capsules and pills do take longer to take effect, unlike oils. It can take between one to two hours to kick in.
Edibles
Many people love the idea of taking CBD but dislike the taste. CBD oil can have an earthy and bitter taste that makes it less than pleasant, especially since you have to hold it in your mouth for a minute.
Some people don’t mind the taste or even say they like it. However, if it’s not for you, there are other options on the market. If you want to start using CBD, consider edibles.
A common type of edible is gummies, which contain CBD but come in delicious flavors. Gummies usually have a fruity taste, meaning you can look forward to taking your CBD each day. The benefit of gummies is that it’s easier to calculate the right dosage each time.
Other edibles include chocolates, candies, and CBD-infused drinks and food.
Topicals
There are a wide variety of creams, lotions, sticks, balms, and massage oils on the market containing CBD. These CBD-infused products are often used to help with joint pain and sore muscles. Some people even use topicals for skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema.
Topicals are easy to use, as you simply need to apply them to your skin. These products are absorbed through the skin and into the bloodstream.
Vaping Products
One of the fastest ways to experience the effects of CBD is through vaping. By inhaling the vapors of CBD oil, compounds are directly absorbed into the lungs.
Vaping is a relatively new method of taking CBD. It hasn’t been as well-studied as other methods, and it’s not known how vaping affects the lungs. However, it’s a method that’s gaining popularity.
