That means some CBD companies are very wary, and end up giving their products hemp-related label names because hemp use is less regulated.
However, not all products you see called hemp oil are actually CBD. Some products are actually hemp seed oil, labeled as hemp oil. Hemp seed oil doesn’t have any health benefits like CBD oil does – it’s just a nice oil to cook with.
In order to make sure you’re actually getting CBD oil and not oil to cook with, look for “hemp extract” on the list of ingredients. Or, even better, just make sure you buy products actually labeled as CBD oil.
Different Types of CBD Oil
CBD, also called cannabidiol, is a compound found in the hemp plant. Depending on how you extract and formulate the compound, you end up with different kinds of CBD. These may have only CBD, or they may include other compounds from the hemp plant.
Full Spectrum CBD
Full spectrum CBD contains all of the compounds that occur naturally in a hemp plant. THC, flavonoids, and terpenes are all found in full spectrum CBD oil, though in small concentrations than CBD itself.
Full spectrum CBD will never contain more than 0.3% THC. This is not enough to induce a psychoactive reaction unless you’re taking a larger dosage than you should.
Broad Spectrum CBD
Broad spectrum CBD oil is very similar to full spectrum CBD oil. They both contain CBD and other compounds commonly found in the hemp plant. The compounds found in broad spectrum CBD are sometimes different than those in full spectrum CBD.
The biggest difference between broad spectrum and full spectrum CBD is that only full spectrum CBD contains THC. Broad spectrum CBD will only have trace amounts of THC.
Unlike the first two types of oils, CBD isolate contains only CBD and no other compounds from the hemp plant. Manufacturers accomplish this by extracting all other substances. What’s left behind is pure CBD extract in a crystalline form.
This crystalline form is not safe for human consumption, so it gets made into oils or other types of CBD products.
What Type of CBD Oil Should You Use?
The question of which type of CBD oil is the most effective is still up for debate. All the different types of CBD oil are very effective, and useful for various problems or ailments.
If you’re comfortable using products that have THC in them, there is a theory that full spectrum CBD is the most effective. This theory is known as the “entourage effect.” Essentially, the theory states that all the different compounds found in the cannabis plant are more effective when they’re taken together.
The entourage effect has not been proven true, however, and remains a theory. In the end, the only reason you should choose a specific type of CBD oil is that you’ve decided that’s your preferred method.
Different CBD Products
Although we’ve only mentioned oils so far, there are many different types of CBD products. Each product falls into one of four methods of consuming CBD: absorbing it under the tongue, ingesting it orally, inhaling or vaping it, and applying it topically.
CBD oil is the only CBD product that can be absorbed under the tongue. Consuming CBD like this is a highly effective method, because more of it gets into your bloodstream faster.
If you’d rather ingest it orally, there are a couple of different things you could choose. You could either take CBD in capsule form or eat an edible or gummy. Capsules ensure you’re getting a specific dosage; edibles take longer to kick in, and less is absorbed into the bloodstream.
Topical CBD such as lotions or salves is also available. Many people choose these when they suffer from chronic pain in a specific area.
Lastly, you can inhale or vape the CBD. This is a great method to feel the effects of CBD quickly. However, it can cause damage to your lungs over time.
